Outpatient neurology

Outpatient neurology means neurological care delivered by appointment in a clinic rather than in a hospital. You come in, are assessed, have testing where needed and go home the same day. It covers diagnosis, ongoing management and monitoring, but not emergency or inpatient care.

Quick answer

Outpatient neurology means neurological care delivered by appointment in a clinic rather than in a hospital. You come in, are assessed, have testing where needed and go home the same day. It covers diagnosis, ongoing management and monitoring, but not emergency or inpatient care.

What it covers

Assessment of new symptoms, establishing a diagnosis, starting and adjusting treatment, and long-term monitoring of conditions such as epilepsy, migraine, neuropathy and multiple sclerosis. Diagnostic studies that can be done in a clinic setting are performed on site: at CNS that means all six in-office studies, each interpreted by the neurologist who ordered it.

What it does not cover

Emergency assessment, inpatient admission and surgery are all outside outpatient neurology. So is anything requiring facilities this practice does not have: there is no imaging suite, no infusion suite and no interventional pain programme, so MRI, CT and infusion therapy are arranged elsewhere with the neurologist continuing to manage care around them.

Why the distinction is worth knowing

It saves wasted journeys and, more importantly, wasted time in situations where time matters. A sudden neurological deficit needs an emergency department, not the earliest available clinic slot. Knowing which setting you need is often the difference between prompt treatment and a delay that changes the outcome.

About this practice

Clinical Neurology Specialists has been physician-owned since 1998, when Leo Germin, M.D., FAANEM founded it. Five board-certified neurologists and four advanced practice providers see patients at the Las Vegas and Henderson offices, each with its own AANEM-accredited electrodiagnostic laboratory.

Clinical Neurology Specialists is an adult outpatient neurology practice for patients 18 and older. The practice performs no surgery and operates no imaging suite, infusion suite or interventional pain programme, and provides no emergency or inpatient care.

Emergency & crisis resources: Clinical Neurology Specialists is not an emergency service. For stroke symptoms, a seizure lasting more than five minutes or any medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline).

Frequently asked

Questions about outpatient neurology

What is outpatient neurology?
Neurological care delivered by appointment in a clinic setting rather than in hospital. You attend, are assessed, have any needed testing and go home the same day. It covers diagnosis, treatment and long-term monitoring. At CNS all six in-office studies are performed on site, each interpreted by the neurologist who ordered it rather than by an external reader.
What is the difference from inpatient neurology?
Inpatient neurology treats people admitted to hospital, usually acutely unwell. Outpatient neurology manages conditions that do not require admission. CNS is outpatient only and provides no inpatient or emergency care. If you are admitted to hospital, the neurologists caring for you there are a different team; outpatient follow-up afterwards can continue here.
Which tests can be done in an outpatient clinic?
At CNS, all six in-office studies: EMG and nerve conduction studies, routine EEG, ambulatory EEG, evoked potentials, transcranial Doppler and VNG balance testing. Both offices hold AANEM accreditation for their electrodiagnostic laboratory. MRI, CT, carotid ultrasound and lumbar puncture are arranged elsewhere, since these offices have no imaging suite, and the reports are reviewed here.
When do I need a hospital instead?
For sudden severe symptoms: one-sided weakness, new speech difficulty, sudden vision loss, the worst headache of your life, a first seizure or new confusion. Those need an emergency department or 911 the same day. Call 911 rather than driving yourself, since treatment for stroke in particular is time-dependent and can begin before you arrive.
Do you see patients under 18?
No. This is an adult outpatient practice for patients 18 and older. Paediatric neurology is a separate specialty requiring a centre equipped for it. Paediatric neurology involves different conditions, different medication considerations and separate training, so it is a genuinely distinct specialty rather than an administrative boundary we could waive on request.
